Writers need all the help they can get to develop believable real characters who are full of personality and who can speak to their readers.

Developing robust and three-dimensional heroes, heroines and the bad guys is the essential ingredient for producing a good novel. With characters, there would be no plot and without a plot, there would not be a story to write. Character development using MBTI can help the writer understand their characters more deeply. Understanding their zodiac signs as well can also help portray their hopes, dreams and how they get on with other signs.

There are four groups in astrology each representing three signs. The groups are allocated an element, which links the signs together and included air, earth, fire and water.

Air Signs and Character Development

The three air signs are Libra, Aquarius and Gemini. In general, air signs use their minds to make sense of the world. Characters with an air sign may come across as detached, aloof and even a little cool. However, they can communicate very well and are curious about things and people.

Earth Signs and Character Development

The three earth signs are Capricorn, Taurus and Virgo. The general characteristics of earth signs are their ‘earthy’ nature, a natural understanding of their habitat. Characters with an earth sign will use their five senses to understand the world they live in and can be very sensual because of it. They can however, become over focused on reality, which could cause a character to develop certain obsessive habits or stubbornness.

Fire Signs and Character Development

The three fire signs are Aries, Leo and Sagittarius. In the main, fire signs are very passionate about life, full of inspiration enthusiasm. They often rely on their inner instincts about people and life and can be very intuitive. However sometimes this means that they miss other signs and signals and can easily offend others because of their lack of sensitivity about their actions.

Water Signs and Character Development

The three water signs are Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces. Generally, water signs are very in tune with emotions, their own and others. They can therefore be quite sensitive to the needs of others. Characters in this group will intuitively know when to step back or offer support and can often help to bring people together. However, some characters may use their understanding of those close to them in a manipulative way.

The four elements of the zodiac portray twelve potential characters. Whilst personality is much more complex, these descriptions along with other development tools can help writers to develop characters who can communicate to the reader through their story telling. The next article will start to explore the twelve personalities which can help to make characters stand out in the crowd.
