Can choosing the right name for your characters make or break your short story or novel? Learn how to find the perfect name for your perfect character.
Different writers take different approaches when naming their characters. For some writers, the name comes first and then they pile on the character attributes, which is generally a harder way to go about creating memorable characters and an easy way to create a cliché. Other writers have a detailed worksheet extolling all the beliefs, dislikes, and loves of their character, even down to their favorite brand of peanut butter. Most writers, however, fall somewhere in between, and have a basic idea for their character, but no concrete plans for a name. What’s in a Name? How important are your characters’ names? The rough truth is that a poorly chosen name can turn off many readers. If you are writing a gritty epic fantasy novel, for example, you might want to eschew a name such as Sir Chad the Valorous. If you are going for a humorous fantasy novel, then feel free to have Sir Chad slay as many goblins as you desire. Buffy isn’t a name you would use for an Egyptian queen, but it fits pretty well for a wise cracking teenage vampire slayer from California. Names can also evoke a sense of place and time, and this can help solidify your character’s believability in many peoples’ minds. Pay attention to the period in which your story takes place as well as the genre. Just a bit of research can go a long way in helping you determine proper and popular names. J.K. Rowling names her characters masterfully. With each name, she is able to evoke an image in the reader’s mind. Of course, someone with a name like Malfoy is going to be up to no good. According to Rowling, it translates to ‘bad faith’ in old French. In addition, Professor Dumbledore’s first name, Albus, translates to ‘white’ or ‘wisdom’ in Latin. As you can see, Rowling certainly did her research. Are Name Generators Worth It?Internet based name generators, such as those found on Seventh Sanctum and Behind the Name, are popular tools for both role-playing gamers and writers looking for character names. While name generators are a fun diversion and can give writers a push in the right direction in their search for a name, they shouldn’t become a crutch for writers unwilling to do the research. Are You Still Looking for a Name?Don’t panic. The right name will come to you. In the end, the most important factor in determining a character’s name (besides the writer, of course) is the character’s personality and history. Some writers claim that your character will eventually tell you his or her true name. When this happens, you had better listen!
